Devon Energy in Morehouse Parish – Smackover Brown Dense?

by Kenneth E. DuBose on July 20, 2011

Devon Energy is prepping a well site in Morehouse Parish where the company is expected to drill an exploration well. The well will be the first drilled in years in Morehouse Parish and is likely part of the Smackover Brown Dense formation that has garnered interest in Union Parish and Union County AR.  There aren’t any well results to really speak of, but companies are assembling land positions and that is where it starts. A good well or two and you might be in the middle of the next big play. The Devon Energy well has a proposed total depth of almost 9,000 feet and will be the first well drilled to these depths in the county.

“Records show the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Office of Conservation approved an oil drilling permit for Devon Energy Production Co. LP of Houston on June 17.”"The proposed Morehouse Parish well, called Crossett 31 No. 1, will have a vertical depth of 8,350 feet into the Smackover geological formation, according to the permit.”

“Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Phyllis Darsenbourg said the permit allows Devon six months to drill the well.”

“ ‘Permits are issued for six or twelve months,” she said. “Usually, when they’re granted, the companies follow up quickly and get started.’ ”
