Bernie Sanders Rails on Fossil Fuel Industry

by Elizabeth Alford on November 30, 2015

Democratic presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders came out swinging last week with stinging remarks against the energy industry.

Energy issues are important political fodder and in a recent speech in South Carolina, Sen. Bernie Sanders made his position known. Sanders railed against political donations to conservative and libertarian causes from people like the Koch brothers and other energy-industry groups saying that climate change is already causing devastating problems.

Bernie Sanders: “To hell with the fossil fuel industry. Worry more about your children and your grandchildren than your campaign contributions.”

Forbes columnist, Christopher Helman reminded us of just how costly an attitude can be by itemizing the approximately 15 million people whose jobs are directly dependent upon fossil fuels.

  • 1 million jobs in the mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction industries.
  • 200,000 jobs for people who produce products out of coal and petroleum — like gasoline.
  • 630,000 jobs selling petroleum products or working at gas stations.
  • 7.6 million jobs in transportation and utilities, including 1.9 million who work in truck transportation and 530,000 in air transportation and 260,000 in rail transportation.
  • 625,000 jobs in electric power generation, transmission and distribution
  •  1.275 million jobs in motor vehicle manufacturing

Sanders remarks are in stark contrast to recent comments by presidential hopeful, Dr Ben Carson when he told a San Antonio crowd that he supports lifting the federal crude oil export ban and the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline.
